Community Tree Planting in the Gambia

Requested by

Association for Local Self Reliance (ALSRE)

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

We aim to assist many groups in the community to protect their environment, and to preserve and manage the forest.

We want to introduce a strategic package for tree planting. This will prevent soil depletion which leads to poor growth in both agriculture and farming activities in the community.

We also want to introduce a strategy for the use of solar cookers. This will help to prevent tree felling for firewood and charcoal.

The strategy will also create sustainable livelihoods and food for the needy people. It will help to reduce disasters. It will help to protect and preserve different species of animals for future generations.

This project proposal, if implemented, will serve as a booster for socio-economic growth, and will help the production of fruit, especially mangoes, cashew nuts and maligner trees.

What is your project and how will it help?

The project aims to restore the forest cover (Community Tree Planting). In The Gambia, the lack of trees has had a serious impact on the environment and loss of animals. The project will help to create awareness and a source of feeding for the community thus providing income and sustainability all year round.

This project on the restoration of forest cover and the introduction of solar cooker in the community will be sustained by the people of the community. This will also serve as a means of livelihood and benefit to the community and contribute to the national development policy objective, namely, poverty alleviation through self-reliance.

The project will ensure that the benefits spread and remain within the target community and at the same time provide self-employment opportunities for members of the community.

The target beneficiaries will be the community in which the project is implemented. It will help to provide livelihoods for young people, the elderly, men, women and children who participate in the tree planting and the families who will acquire knowledge about using solar cookers instead of firewood or charcoal.
