Ells Culver, a Diplomat for the Poor - August, 2005
We have grieved deeply to hear about the death of Ells Culver, a Charter Member of Global Hand.
His sudden passing, from an unexpected aneurism in the brain, is a shock to us all. There was an aura of greatness about Ells. When you were with him, you knew you were with one who walked with princes. Indeed, Ells’ counsel was sought by national and international decision-makers, as well as world leaders in the relief and development arena. He was a diplomat for the poor: a man who moved with an ease of elegance and sense of humour, while standing absolutely resolute in his depth of commitment to serve those who suffer. Ells helped re-shape our needy world by working with World Vision in their formative years and, later, co-founding Mercy Corps. On a personal note, from Global Hand’s inception, Ells encouraged the vision and was always there to offer help along its way. During his regular trips to Hong Kong, he graciously took time from his demanding schedule to take us out for dinner, network us with others, offer his depth of wisdom and extend loving care. We will miss him greatly. The humanitarian world has lost an elder statesman and we have lost a wonderful friend. For more information on Mercy Corps, contact Gary Waltenbaugh at email@example.com
