Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?
As the world becomes a global village, education is becoming more important than ever, therefore libraries will revolutionize and empower natives, as well as other nationalities living in Ghana. The main focus of the project is to strengthen local educational structures in all the 138 District of Ghana and to encourage the population to take advantage of the resources available on the internet, thereby bridging the gap between the have and the have-nots. Overall is the project focused on combating illiteracy among the population in Ghana.
The Libraries, once completed and operational, will supply approximately 3,450 potential indirect jobs and 4830 direct jobs for the entire 128 district and 10 regional libraries.
What is your project and how will it help?
The project code named “Save Ghana Libraries Project” involves building of new libraries in all districts as well as the ten regional capitals across Ghana. The libraries will be co-located with commercial centres in order to sustain the project in the long run and for better growth in education and service.
The libraries will contain no less than 30,000 books for each district, developing the reading habits of the people in the communities, thereby reducing the illiteracy rate in the communities. The facility will provide programs that will train people to identify skills which will make them more accessible for employment, thereby leading to a drastic reduction in poverty. These libraries, when completed will provide new state-of-the-art facilities and supplies such as books, computers, printers, photocopiers which will assist us in combating illiteracy. The library will have children’s computer laboratories. The purpose of the internet café is to sustain the library and provide the long distance learning programmes, as well as provide photocopy services, all at affordable costs to the communities.
The libraries will give invitations to all registered teachers in the country to participate in free computer literacy training programs, which will enable them to teach basic computer skills in the class rooms. Training programs will be held for children and adults of all ages as well as the handicapped to equip them with necessary tools of empowerment.
Our project also entails a campaign on the need to improve libraries in Ghana, to impact on those responsible for the development and maintenance of libraries in Ghana. Our analysis showed that not much has been done to improve both infrastructure and content in 21 libraries revisited. This has led to no other alternative than to advocate for the government to establish the “Ghana Library Development Authority” which shall be autonomous and independent of any governmental agency or department. It shall have the vested powers to establish, manage, coordinate, and raise funds, both local and international to transform libraries in Ghana.
