Support Disability Issues, South Africa
Requested byGive A Limb
Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?
Our purpose is to underline the plight of some families; when a “bread-winner” losses the use of a limb through a freak accident, sickness or amputation. We zoom in on the lives of amputees and how; one person is connected to the other. We engage in activism around disability issues. Often, it’s assumed that amputees/ people with disabilities are in the minority. A person that has lost a limb feels incomplete; plus simmering resentment and insecurity. These feelings, in most cases put a strain on relationships; frustration starts to build. The ripple effect is that the immediate home is affected; then it trickles down in affecting the community and society at-large. If one member of a family is affected, just like domino, the ripple effect goes a long way in affecting the social strata of a community.
What is your project and how will it help?
The project seeks to suggest that there ought to be an improved statistics form of data. It will also produce findings to support the improvement of disability data collection as Government policy can only work with a proper collection and compilation of national data of persons with disabilities. Without proper statistic and data, the prevalence of disability in South Africa cannot be monitored. Integrating the specific needs of amputees/ disabled people as a basic component in mitigating against the worsening condition of persons with disabilities. Just like AIDS, the negative connotations and stigma attached to disability makes for inaccurate assessment of the prevalence of disability; Hence the push for strengthening anti discrimination laws and other measures that explicitly cover discrimination against persons with disability. Furthermore, our project calls for more efforts to apply the internationally recommended guidelines, principles and methodologies for collecting and analyzing and statistics on disability.
