Helping teachers to learn about climate change in Kenya

Requested by

National Network of Retrenchees for Social and Economic Justice

Who are you trying to help? What issue are you trying to address?

Few children under 18 understand anything about climate change and climate change literacy is generally very low in Kenya. Many people don’t know what causes climate change and the steps they can take to adapt and mitigate climate change.

The Government has not mainstreamed climate change learning in schools, making it difficult for people to take any steps to address the issue. The effects of climate change are visible but people need to understand the causes and sources as well. Greenhouse gas emissions and quantification are issues alien to Kenyans. Students in primary schools need to be taught early to understand climate science. People confuse climate change and weather.

Teaching teachers could increase uptake of the subject from the lower level. Empowering 100 primary school teachers in Nyamira County and Machakos could be a source of promoting climate change learning in the regions.

Kenya like other developing nations will remain poor and unable to access climate change funding since people do not understand the methodologies and steps to take to benefit from such facilities. Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction projects to earn ccrbon credits can only take off if climate change knowledge is available starting from primary schools and that can only start with empowering instructors.

What is your project and how will it help?

Introducing climate change learning to teachers will be the best starting point for climate change learning and to persuade the Government to mainstream this in schools. We have acquired acceptance from the local GHG expert to lead in the training of teachers for 1 year.

100 teachers will receive technical training on topics such as “What Greenhouse Gas is”, “The sources and types of greenhouse gases” , “How to identify the source of greenhouse emissions”, “Emissions quantification methods” and “How to package emissions into C02e for possible carbon credits to generate wealth”.

100 Teachers in semi- arid regions of Machakos and Nyamira Counties will undertake intensive training for 2 weeks in a residential facility during school holidays.

The teachers trained will champion the learning of the subject among education policy makers and teaching unions. Ministry of Education and Kenya Institute of Education officials will be invited to evaluate the teaching materials and how the programme is working.

Publishers and the Union of Teachers will be invited as stakeholders with a view to mainstreaming the teaching of climate science and publishing books on the topic.

The teachers will be paid a participation fee and transport costs will be reimbursed.

Training materials include videos , drama and case studies.

The project will hire the lead facilitator who will receive Sh. 25,000 per day and three rapporteurs @ sH.10,000. The trainees will have full board facilities @ 4700 per day. The project will hire a projector @ Sh.10,000 per day and training stationery @sH.350 per participant.
Materials development will be done for 10 days @ Sh.300,000.
The project will engage 3 volunteers @ Sh.1000 per day for 15 days a month to will assist mobilization, identification of participants and other logistics that go with the training.

Reports will be prepared quarterly by the project director, Mr.Samuel Otenyo. All project funds will go through the bank signed by authorized officials.

How can other people partner with you on your project?

Partners who contact us for partnership are encouraged. We accept technical partnership , financial aid and volunteers to implement the project and expand it to other regions.
