World Vegetable Center (AVRDC) – Niger, a regional office of The World Vegetable Center, works to alleviate poverty and malnutrition through the increased production and consumption of safe vegetables. The Center’s work in Niger began in 1996 with a project to develop home gardening to improve regional vitamin A nutrition. Appropriate vegetables were selected and trialed, extensive training programs done for national partners and publications for farmer use produced. More recently national representatives from Niger helped set the Center’s regional priorities for indigenous vegetable improvement that focuses on okra, roselle, African egg plant and amaranth.
