The death of Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997 catalysed the donation of millions of pounds. The Memorial Fund was established to manage this money and to provide grants for work in the UK and internationally. Since its founding, the Fund has pledged £70 million in grants to over 420 UK-based charities. The international grants programme includes ongoing support in the areas of landmines and explosive remnants of war, and palliative care work in sub-Saharan Africa.

Since 2007, Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund has focused its efforts and resources on achieving four goals:

• To ensure that palliative care is integrated into the care and treatment of people with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-limiting illnesses in sub-Saharan Africa.
• To ensure that refugees and people seeking asylum in the UK are treated with fairness, humanity and in accordance with international law.
• To promote fair treatment and better futures for the most vulnerable people in the criminal justice system.
• To promote the protection of civilians during and after conflict by bringing an end to the use of cluster munitions in warfare.
