The UNESCO Beijing office serves as the Cluster Office to the East Asian sub-region to maximize development, networking and sharing of resources among member States. The office assists the member states with other UN agencies in meeting the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), especially those aimed at eradicating extreme poverty, achieving universal primary education, promoting gender equality and empowerment of women, combating HIV/AIDS and ensuring environmental sustainability. UNESCO Beijing Office serves its member states comprehensively in the thematic areas of education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, and communication and information. The office’s programmes are also supported by extra-budgetary resources and various volunteer groups.
