Challenging Heights
Unverified non-profit organisation
Challenging Heights has over ten years experience working with vulnerable children in the fishing industry. The organization is a Ghanaian-run grassroots NGO, founded in 2003 by James Kofi Annan, who escaped from slavery in Ghana’s fishing industry at the age of 13. For the past 15 years, this NGO has developed strong strategies for achieving their purpose.
Vision: A country in which child trafficking is a thing of the past and children’s rights are celebrated.
Mission: To prevent child trafficking, reduce child slavery and promote children’s rights.
This is one of the leading NGOs in Ghana working to reintegrate children from their care into a family environment and then monitoring and supporting those children and their families in the community. Challenging Heights have successfully completed reintegration with over 400 survivors of child slavery and child trafficking in the last five years. In addition, the NGO provides a range of programmes designed to tackle the root causes of child trafficking, primarily working with women and children in underserved, hard-to-reach, and at-risk fishing communities in Ghana’s Central Region.
Challenging Heights is based in Winneba, the heart of Ghana’s coastal fishing communities which are the primary source of children trafficked to work as slaves on Lake Volta. In addition to the Hovde House shelter, the NGO started a school in the middle of Winneba, operate a livelihoods site focused on empowering women economically and run sensitisation and youth empowerment projects in the communities where they work. 77% of local residents say that trafficking has reduced in the last five years. The NGO also advocates for changes in policy and practice from the local to global levels, contribute to the knowledge base about anti-slavery best practices and partner with international NGOs and coalitions dedicated to fighting modern slavery and protecting children’s rights.
