About USEC

United Safe Environment Creators (USEC) is a grassroots, non-profit, community-based organization run by refugees in the Kakuma refugee camp. The organization started back in 2015 and was legalized in November 2016 under the Ministry of Labor, Social Security, and Service with reg. SCSDO/CBO/BO-201 and certificate no. 38613.

At United Safe Environment Creators, we are a group of dynamic and passionate young refugees committed to creating a better future for ourselves and our communities. Our organization was founded in the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, and we are proud to be a community-based initiative that addresses crucial issues such as livelihood, child protection, and climate change. We are driven by a deep sense of purpose and a desire to positively impact our community. We invite you to join us and become a part of our passion for creating a safe and prosperous future for all.

Mission: To empower young refugees and their communities through livelihood initiatives, child protection, and environmental sustainability, fostering a safe and prosperous future for all.

Vision: A world where refugees and marginalized communities have access to quality education, sustainable livelihood opportunities, and live in a safe environment where they can thrive and contribute positively to society.

Objectives

• To promote access to quality, inclusive education for all, regardless of their background.
• Enable refugees and marginalized communities to build sustainable livelihoods through skills development, entrepreneurship training, and access to resources, thereby fostering economic resilience and self-sufficiency.
• Promote environmental conservation and sustainability within refugee camps and surrounding communities through awareness campaigns, tree planting, waste management initiatives, and collaborative efforts, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for present and future generations.

Where we are

United Safe Environment Creators currently carries its activities in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya. However, our area of reach will progressively expand to various countries in all regions of Africa.

Our program

1. The Livelihood Program

Our livelihoods program focuses on teenage mothers and vulnerable women in the Kakuma refugee camp. It concentrates on enhancing the capabilities of individuals through vocational training, offering courses in tailoring and hairdressing. We provide entrepreneurship training, including business planning, financial management, and marketing.
Moreover, workshops on economic empowerment improve financial understanding and offer chances for networking. Mentorship, counseling, and peer support groups help with personal growth. This comprehensive strategy is focused on promoting financial self-sufficiency, strength, and involvement in the community.

2. Child Protection Program

United Safe Environment Creators (USEC) is committed to protecting children in Kakuma Refugee Camp. Our program focuses on three key areas:

2.1. Prevention and Response to Violence, Exploitation, and Abuse

We aim to create a safe and supportive environment for children by addressing the risks they face:
• Awareness Campaigns: We educate the community about child rights, early marriage, violence, exploitation, and abuse. Through these campaigns, we empower families and community leaders to protect children.
• Child-Friendly Spaces: We provide safe spaces where children can play, learn, and receive psychosocial support. These spaces are integrated with a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) component to meet children’s social, cognitive, physical, and emotional needs, helping them thrive in schools and communities.

2.2. Ensuring Access to Education

Every child has the right to education, and USEC ensures no child is left behind:
• School Support: We distribute school items such as uniforms, bags, exercise books, and pay school fees to help children access basic education.
• Remedial Classes: For children who have missed school, we provide remedial classes to help them catch up and improve their performance.

2.3. Family Reunification

We are a member and we collaborate with the Global Family Reunification Network (FRUN) to help separated children reconnect with their families. Our team works closely with families, communities, and partner organizations to ensure every child finds a safe and loving home.

3. Climate and Environmental sustainability program

This program promotes environmental conservation and sustainable practices in the Kakuma and Kalobeyei communities. Through education, community engagement, and practical initiatives, the program addresses pressing environmental issues while empowering residents to become stewards of their natural surroundings.

Program Components:

3.1. Environmental Education and Awareness:

• Develop and implement educational materials and workshops focused on local environmental issues, including deforestation, soil erosion, water scarcity, and waste management.
• Collaborate with schools, community centers, and local leaders to integrate environmental education into formal and informal learning settings.
• Organize awareness campaigns and events to engage community members in discussions about the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable living practices.

3.2. Waste Management and Recycling:

• Implement waste collection and recycling programs to reduce littering and pollution in the community.
• Establish recycling facilities and initiatives for materials such as plastic, paper, and organic waste.
• Engage community members in clean-up campaigns and initiatives to promote responsible waste disposal practices.

3.3. Climate Change Adaptation:

• Raise awareness about the impacts of climate change on the local environment and livelihoods, including changes in weather patterns, increased temperatures, and water scarcity.
• Facilitate community discussions and planning processes to identify adaptation strategies and resilience-building measures.
