Tembea Youth Centre for Sustainable Development is an indigenous Community Based Development Organization based in Ugunja, Siaya district, Nyanza Province, Kenya.
Established in the year 2003 as a Self Help Group and registered with the Ministry of Gender, Culture, and Sport under the National Plan for Community Development.
Tembea have evolved to a hub for local community groups as well as young individuals sharing similar vision of scaling up the rights based approach to development agenda at the community levels.
This was in response to community need for a support structure for poverty alleviation, environmental conservation and fight against HIV/AIDS pandemic.
The objectives of Tembea Youth are to initiate environmentally friendly programmes for the community members and environmental and natural resources institutions and organizations through collaboration and partnership programmes.
• To improve group and individual knowledge and skills for sustainable development through the use of appropriate technologies.
• To make information available and accessible to groups and individuals on appropriate technologies for sustainable development.
• To provide a forum for sharing, exchanging, collecting, and referencing information.
• To respond to educational socio?economic, recreational emotional and psychological needs of young people.
• To fight HIV/AIDS pandemic in the community
There are currently four main programmes.
These include 1) Community Saving and Lending 2) Human Rights and Good Governance 3) Environmental and Natural Resource Management and 4) Training, Education and Applied Research.
