The United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) monitors the line separating India and Pakistan in the state of Jammu and Kashmir to maintain the 1949 ceasefire between the two countries signed under the Karachi Agreement. UNMOGIP has been severely restricted in its operations since 1971 because of India’s insistence that its mandate has lapsed. UNMOGIP will, however, operate in the area until the United Nations Security Council decides otherwise.
