Established in 1975, the Sri Lanka Association Washington D.C. (SLAWDC) focuses on facilitating social and cultural interaction among the Sri Lanka community in the USA. SLAWDC organises different recreational activities, e.g. annual parties, sport tournaments, food fairs, youth dances, as well as educational events such as career guidance seminars, lectures or addresses. In 2001 it also founded an affiliate association, the Sri Lanka Association of Greater Washington (SLAGW) for developing humanitarian and educational activities in Sri Lanka. The SLAGW projects include providing medical assistance, drought and tsunami relief.
