Established in 1984, the IWN was the first organization in Israel dedicated to promoting women’s rights and equality. The IWN’s work is multi-faceted: promoting women’s rights legislation, providing legal representation, offering educational programs, leading empowerment and leadership trainings, conducting policy research, promoting enforcement mechanisms, and more. Focusing on tools that create wide-reaching change, IWN takes a pro-active role in advocating women’s rights in the Knesset, providing pro-bono legal aide on precedent-setting cases, and facilitating a “Hotline” that provides advice and services to women who have suffered discrimination. Additionally, IWN facilitates programs with differing constituencies to address social issues in Israel. The Nemesh Project is for 10th grade girls and boys to discuss the attitudes and approaches to gender equality. The program provides knowledge on issues of social inequalities and stereotypes, raises self-awareness, changes attitudes regarding gender inequality, nurtures leadership among young women, and encourages female youth to plan professional careers. The “Woman of Valor” Project offers a way for long-term unemployed women to learn skills that will help maximize their natural attributes and find fulfilling and rewarding employment. Jumpstart is a program for young women under the supervision of the welfare department to be part of both a personal and group empowerment process along with personal evaluations of abilities and capabilities. The Towards Coexistence Courses offered by IWN encourage an active dialogue networking system, and exchange between Jewish and Arab women of different communities to challenge the concepts they have internalized through socialization. These classes will lead to personal growth and a deeper trust and understanding to create real coexistence, inclusion, and acceptance. IWN also operates a research and information center containing over 2,000 volumes, articles, periodicals, newsletters, and newspaper clippings along with over 1,500 documents including government documents, annual reports, and publications of other organizations, pamphlets, and more.
