The Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI) was established in 1951 at Kyoto University, Japan, to conduct research on a variety of problems related to the prevention and reduction of natural disasters. By the end of 1995, DPRI had set up sixteen research sections, four research centres, five observatories and two experimentation laboratories. Nearly all aspects of natural disasters are intensively investigated including earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, debris flows, floods, storm surges and strong winds.
