The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is an international aid agency, established in the aftermath of the second world war to provide food, clothing and shelter for children affected by disease and famine. This mandate was extended indefinitely in 1953 and UNICEF now works in 191 countries worldwide. In Guatemala, UNICEF works with teachers, women, children and adolescents to promote knowledge and respect for the rights of children. UNICEF also advocates for rights based reform, monitors and evaluates the human rights situation, and provides disaster relief.
