Chevron supports Global Fund to fight diseases
Chevron Corporation is Global Fund’s first Corporate Champion, making a commitment to invest in Global Fund-supported programs fighting AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria in parts of Asia and Africa.
In 2008, Chevron became the Global Fund’s first Corporate Champion, and they invested $30 million over three years in the organization to support AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria programs in Angola, Nigeria, South Africa, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. More recently, they continued their support for the Global Fund by making a three-year $25 million commitment for 2011 through 2013 to the U.S. Fund for the Global Fund, a new nonprofit organization established to encourage individuals, corporations and charities to contribute to the Global Fund’s mission.
The new funding is being used to build on the Global Fund’s past successes, which include helping more than 300,000 people living with HIV in Nigeria, Indonesia, South Africa, and Thailand obtain access to life-saving antiretroviral treatments; supporting efforts to distribute nearly one million insecticide-treated bed nets in Angola; promoting peer education programs in South Africa that have reached 1.9 million young people; and helping to detect more than 9,000 cases of TB. In addition, Chevron encourages staff members in these countries to share their skills with the local programs to assist them in improving grant reach and performance. Chevron’s efforts to fight disease are rooted in the belief that healthy communities produce healthy employees who in turn lead to improved economic circumstances in the places where they work.
