Malawi Humanitarian Customs Regulations

This document was submitted in response to a questionnaire distributed by Global Hand regarding humanitarian customs information. It provides regulations for importing humanitarian aid into Malawi.

Tax Exemption

Tax exemption is given on relief consignments containing food items. Tax exemption is available on other items on prior application. There is also a requirement for non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to apply to the Government of Malawi for tax exemption before they start benefiting from duty-free or rebated taxes.

Prohibited Goods

Fire arms and ammunition are not permitted entry to Malawi as humanitarian aid. Expired food items and items close to expiration date are not permitted.

Pre-Shipment Application

Pre-shipment application should be made to the Acting Commissioner General, Malawi Revenue Authority.

Restrictions

Fumigation on food items is required. Restrictions are in place on expiry date for food items.

Monetary Valuation

Monetary valuation is required on the consignment.

Other Information

Organisation must apply to the Acting Commissioner General in advance for duty free status before importation.
