Principles of Accountability for International Philanthropy

The Principles of Accountability for International Philanthropy, created by the Council on Foundations (COF) and the European Foundation Centre (EFC), are designed to increase the accountability and effectiveness of cross-border grantmaking. The document is intended as a voluntary and aspirational tool specifically for international donors, and was drafted following consultations with foundations, philanthropic experts and also grantees and partner organisations. The seven Principles of Accountability listed in the document are integrity, understanding, respect, responsiveness, fairness, cooperation and collaboration, and effectiveness. The document also includes nine areas of Good Accountability Practices, which are practical steps that funders may choose to adopt in implementing the seven principles.
