Founded in 1997, Bahia Street is registered as a non-profit organisation in Brazil, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

Bahia Street’s mission is to combat poverty and violence through quality educational opportunities for economically-impoverished young women and girls in Brazil. Outside of Brazil, Bahia Street teaches new perspectives on NGO management and issues of inequality, poverty, race, class and gender.

Bahia Street’s primary goals are to allow the students to reach their highest academic potential, including attending university if that is their aspiration; to support the girls’ physical health and well-being, including medical care and good nutrition; to build each student’s sense of identity and self-esteem and foster creativity; and to support the families of the students and the communities in which they live.
